Ferry Terminal Aberdeen

The brief for this project was develop a design for a Marine Operations Control Tower at Nigg Bay in Aberdeen.

The main aspect of this project was the technicality of the façade. We were asked to develop a façade though would consider the environmental aspects of the building as well as the characteristics and aesthetics.

The building was mainly cast in situ concrete to create all the floors and elevator shafts. The building then had a lightweight steel structure on the outside that allowed the glass skin to be fixed. Cast u-shaped glass was used with a textured finish to minimise the amount of light coming through. This was done in two layers to create a buffer space between the two glass skins. This allowed the building to be insulated while avoiding overheating.

The textured glass finish gave an interesting effect when the building was lit up during the night like a glass box in on the edge of the water.
