Bothy in the Highlands
The project brief was to design a Bothy in a rural location made from a form of timber construction. The location is based in the centre of the Highlands outside of Inverness.
The design is based on a strategy to merge the building into the landscape. Inspiration was taken from the mountainous landscape and applied to the form of the building. By using a series of mono-pitched roofs at different heights and sizes, we could achieve a form that resembled mountains.
Offsite prefabricated wall panels made from locally sourced timber and insulation were used to construct the bothy. The exterior was then finished in charred Scottish Larch timber to be sympathetic to the landscape but at the same time giving it presence in the landscape.
The interior was finished in Douglas fir plywood to give make you feel as though you are in the forest and not a man made structure.
